Former Tennessee nurse found guilty of murder after accidentally injecting patient with the wrong drug

After three days of trial, RaDonda Vaught, a former nurse who made a fatal drug mistake in 2017, was found guilty of accidentally injecting 75-year-old Charlene Murphy with the wrong medication.

Vaught, 38, was found guilty on Friday after a jury deliberated for hours on @tennessean reports. She was found guilty of negligent homicide and neglect of a defective adult.

The patient was given the numbing drug vecuronium but was supposed to be given Versed, a sedative. The drug left Murphy unable to breathe, leading to her death a day later.

“I’m just relieved that this part of the process is over,” Vaught said after the verdict. “I hope that they (the Murphey family) are also relieved to leave this process that has been in place in the legal system for four and a half years. I hope that they can find peace with the resolution of this process. ”

The former Vanderbilt University Medical Center nurse was initially fired in 2018 after the incident. In 2018, Vanderbilt settled out of court with his family. While the law requires the incident to be reported to the state or health officials, it is not. Charges were brought against Vaught after an anonymous complaint was reported to health officials in October 2018. She was subsequently arrested and charged in February 2019.
