Former Rep. George Santos Expected to Plead Guilty in Fraud Case, Sources Tell AP: NPR

Former U.S. Congressman George Santos is expected to plead guilty to multiple charges in federal fraud caseaccording to someone who knows this issue well.

Santos, a Republican from New York, is expected to plead guilty at a trial scheduled for Monday on Long Island, the person said.

The person could not publicly discuss details of the plea and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The hearing was scheduled for Monday afternoon after prosecutors and Santos’ attorneys jointly requested it on Friday. They also requested and received several pretrial delays.

The news comes just weeks before jury selection begins on September 9. Santos has previously pleaded not guilty to a series of financial charges, including lying to Congress about his wealth, claiming unemployment benefits while actually working, and using campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses like designer clothes.

The New York Republican was expelled from Congress in December after an ethics investigation found “clear evidence” that he broke the law and used his public position for personal gain.
