Forget robots, new ‘Morphobot’ developed by Caltech, fly, steer, walk and roll

The day of robots is over? Well, meet M4! It’s the artificial assistant you’ve always wanted but no one can build. The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has developed a new car-sized Morphobot RC that can transform its structure to walk, drive and fly. This morphobot is called M4 (Multi-Modal Mobility Morphobot). it’s built with the latest electronics, engines, and a small computer that helps it decide what shape to turn into.

Over the years, we have seen the robotics industry grow from the basics to the present almost achieving miracles. With the advancement of technology and artificial intelligence helping it along the way, robotics has stepped up its game to deliver human-like high-tech robots and the M4 is a great example of this.

Based on nature Reportedly, the M4 design team installed giant wheels that rotate and resemble the design of a drone that can fly in seconds. In addition, it can climb steep hills using propellers as a power source. The robot can also stand with the help of two giant wheels and can walk if desired.

According to The Verge, the M4 was designed by Mory Gharib, professor of aeronautical and biological engineering at Caltech, in collaboration with Alireza Ramezani, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northeastern University.

The M4 can switch to eight different positions and can make its own decisions with the help of artificial intelligence. It assesses the environment and changes its form accordingly. It has the ability to take the wounded to the hospital or explore other planets and distant worlds.

Not only is the motion conversion and AI available, it also has a Jetson Nano CPU, a small processor computer with a focus on robotics from Nvidia. And the design is inspired by illustrations of meerkats and walruses.

“Our aim is to push the boundaries of robotic mobility by designing a system that exhibits extraordinary mobility with a range of distinct modes of movement,” Ramezani said. .

Caltech says that the real-life game-changer is AI because it offers the most effective combination of movements to maneuver.
