Ford plans to “improve” Mustang Mach-E step by step, won’t skimp on mid-cycle refresh enhancements

CEO Jim Farley said the Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV will receive continuous updates rather than the standard mid-cycle refresh in the industry, CEO Jim Farley said Thursday during his quarterly earnings call. car manufacturer’s quarter.

Automakers often save enhancements for mid-cycle refreshes, so named because they’re timed between redesigns. But Ford is “finding a lot of profitable opportunities” from potential changes that it wants to exploit as soon as possible, Farley said.

“If I were to show you our Mach-E cooling system, it has four engines, maybe two should be,” says Farley. “It has 60 or 70 tubes, probably needs to be a third of that. And those are the opportunities we’re chasing. And we’re not waiting for next year. We’re not waiting for a change. We’re going to improve that vehicle now and then use that expertise for Lightning, E-Transit, and of course all of our electrical platforms.”

Farley also says he doesn’t have the opportunity to shell out that much for a post-Job One product. We think this claimed cost savings once production begins could allow Ford to produce more vehicles at a lower cost and possibly lower costs.

This closely follows what Mustang Mach-E chief engineer Donna Dickson said revealed in a 2021 interview. The dual-motor cooling water pump is one of the hardware changes she mentions aimed at reducing weight and improving range.

Mr. Dickson said Ford is planning “annual improvements” in range through the 2024 model year. To date, the 2022 Mach-E has achieved a maximum range of 314 miles, up from 305 miles for the vehicle. with the 2021 model.

The incremental improvement strategy described by Farley and Dickson also follows Tesla more closely, which has make big improvements Those will be major redesigns at other automakers as changes are underway.

Ford plans to triple production of Mach-E in 2023. Maybe some of these improvements will be included later.

Car manufacturers recently also accelerate production plan F-150 Lightning up to 150,000 annually. While the Lightning is based on the current internal combustion F-150 platform, Ford is also working towards a next-generation full-size electric truck with “super loud“based on a new platform.
