Ford confirms F-150 Lightning EV battery pack details, range estimate


Ford last week discussed battery capacity for F-150 Lightning picks up as part of a live stream organized for “key stakeholders”. And then it gave some numbers for Lightning’s two available bundles for the first time officially.

As mentioned in the presentation, they are 98 kWh for the standard range versions and 131 kWh for the wide range versions, the company confirms. Green Car Report.

Presentation transcript posted at F150Gen14.com, a forum page dedicated to the perennial best-selling version of the 14th generation Ford, added another detail. Versions with the standard range package will have an estimated EPA range of 230 miles, while the 300 miles of the extended range package will apply to the Pro, XLT and Laries trims. The top Platinum versions, which will likely be heavier, could get their own rating of 280 miles, but Ford hasn’t confirmed that.

While these are all predictions and are subject to change as the actual EPA ratings are finalized, it does give us a few more insights – most notably in terms of performance.

Most notably, Ford is hoping to get a decent performance out of the Lightning, which is more than half the size of the R1T. That equates to about 2.3 mph/kwh, based on rated range, for either version of the Lightning—compared to about 2.4 mph/kwh for the R1T and its 314-mile range, assuming it leaves about 130 kWh as usable (135 kWh is a total number, it’s confirmed).

In both cases, it’s quite a bit better than the giant Hummer EV, go 329 miles, according to GM, above about 200 kwh in the usable range — about 1.6 mi/kwh.

Ford has said that on a 150 kWh DC fast charger, Lightning will go from 15% to 80% in 41 minutes with the extended range battery or 44 minutes with the standard battery. On a Level 2 80-amp charger with a larger battery pack, it should be able to recover up to 30 mph.

Lightning will also be one of the first cars in the US market to offer charge from one car to another (shown above with the F-150 Hybrid), as part of the truck’s built-in bi-directional capability. That will be used to effectively turn Lightning into a giant portable power bank devoted to focusing on solar energy. home energy ecosystem Ford plans to sell soon.

Ford has said that its order bank for the F-150 Lightning will open in January — so we’ll have more details to report in just a few weeks.
