Ford cancels three-row electric SUV, switches to hybrid

Ford cars‘S Electric three-row SUV was postponed earlier this year. has now been officially canceled. It was just one of Ford’s electric cars and hybrid vehicle related announcements today.

In addition to the SUV being killed off before its launch, Ford said it is delaying production of its next-generation electric pickup truck built on the T3 platform. This will be Lightning successor (built on a dedicated EV platform instead of a modified one) F-150 aircraft one) is expected to be pushed back about 18 months to late 2027. A medium-sized truck being developed by Ford’s “skunkworks” team in California (with an eye toward affordability) is also slated for a 2027 launch.

Instead of a three-row electric SUV, Ford says it’s turning its attention to hybrid car for future three-row products. There’s no timeline, but Ford’s statement says to expect “breakthrough efficiency, performance benefits and emissions compared to pure gas-powered vehicles and extends the vehicle’s operating range over road trip vs pure tram.” Ford also said it will provide an update on the company’s electrification plans in the first half of 2025, so we’ll probably know more next year.

Still, Ford remains committed to updating and evolving its current range of electric vehicles, Mustang Mach-E And F-150 Lightning aircraft. It also plans to start production of the next generation commercial truck in 2026 at its Ohio assembly plant. And while Ford originally planned to start assembling vehicles at its massive manufacturing facility in Tennessee next year, it now plans only battery cell production there by 2025.

These moves will be financially costly for Ford, as the company said it “will incur a non-cash special charge of approximately $400 million to depreciate certain product-specific manufacturing assets for its previously planned all-electric three-row SUVs.” Ford also said such actions could result in additional costs and cash outlays of $1.5 billion. In terms of total spending, Ford said it will reduce its annual cash outlay on electric vehicles from 40% to 30%. Ultimately, Ford believes these moves today will help it build a profitable electric vehicle business in the future.
