For the first time, US passport holders can apply in person at the fairs this summer

It’s no secret to get a Passport takes longer than usual in the past few months.

And while, unfortunately, there’s no immediate fix for that entire backlog, U.S. passport applicants have trouble making an appointment to start the process. You can apply in person at passport-acceptance fairs held every month across the country — most of which are intended for first-time passport holders and children under 17.

The fair accepts special passports for new applicants are being held at local post offices, libraries and government offices, with more events planned for this summer. Those eligible to renew their passports should continue to do so by mail, according to a State Department official.

To define an event, you can use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Acceptable base search page to identify upcoming events by state.

Most events are held during the day, with some events available on weekends, depending on location. If you can’t find an event conveniently, note that new locations are added weekly. Some require appointments and some allow you to arrive during specified hours.

Similar documents are required for in-person passport processing at these events as well as outside of these events.

This includes completing the paper form, providing the original or a certified copy plus a copy of US citizenship (e.g. birth certificate), valid ID, and a copy of said ID (e.g., by driver) and a photo of the applicant responding request. Some facilities offer photo services for an additional fee.
