About 5% of businesses with 250 or more employees have offered to pay their workers a one-time living expense in the past three months.

This figure comes from the Office of National Statistics’ Business Insights report, which also says the rate is just 1% in smaller companies.

It comes despite many businesses grappling with their own rising costs, with 27% saying their main concern is inflation and 20% saying it’s energy costs.

Sky News previously reported that builder Barratt and Taylor Wimpey offered staff £1,000 to help them cope with the rising cost of living.

At Barratt it is for 6,000 employees below senior management and at Taylor Wimpey it is for workers earning less than £70,000 – about 90% of the company’s workforce.

Lloyds, Rolls royce carand HSBC Bank also one of the big companies that have rewarded workers to help them cope with more expensive bills.

In February, Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey criticized for suggesting that workers should not demand high wagesbecause they can drive inflation.

This is due to the risk that employers will then pass the higher wage costs on to consumers in the form of higher prices, creating an inflationary spiral.

Bank interest rates rose 50 basis points last week – the sixth increase since December and the biggest increase since 1995 – one of the few tools it has to fight inflation.

But with Inflation last recorded at 9.4% and energy price forecast Getting worse by the week, many workers have no choice but to seek a raise.

Several unions have launched strike action, or are preparing, including railway workers, bus drivers, postal workers, lawyers and port workers.

They are all looking for higher wages ahead of what is expected to be a tough winter for many of the low-income earners.
