Animal Equality’s work on behalf of farmed animals is made possible through the generosity of our amazing supporters. Here we meet Dawn and learn about best practice through donations, her love of Latin dance, and why she supports Animal Equality. Thank you, Dawn!

How did you learn about Animal Equality and what inspired you to become an advocate?
A while ago, I read an analysis by Animal Charity Reviewers on how many animals were saved for every dollar donated to animal welfare organizations. Animal equality is one of the top lists.

How and when were you first aware of the agricultural problems in the factory?
Unfortunately, when people are shopping in the grocery store, myself included in the past, they don’t relate to the reality of what these animals have suffered as it remains very hidden. At least 20 years ago or so, I watched several videos of pigs in factory situations. It is unsettling to see them as special and intelligent animals. I have also witnessed chickens being held in terrible conditions. My heroes are the individuals who got these videos. I abhor the law that prevents access to these farms.

Tell us about how you got involved in animal protection.
I’ve been thinking a lot about where I can do the best with my donations. This is a very subjective analysis as there are so many good organizations that support it. My focus quickly became on alleviating suffering, and factory rearing billions of animals under inhumane conditions became my primary concern. These animals cannot move on their own and have to rely on the mercy of humans to take care of them.

What is your favorite restaurant, dish or plant-based food and why?
My favorite plant-based food is falafel – so I tend to go for Middle Eastern Restaurants. A new Middle Eastern cafe – Café Ceres – just opened across from me and their falafel pita is amazing. At home, I sometimes break up falafel a bit and add it to my salad.

Tell us something about yourself that people will be surprised to hear!
18 years ago, I decided to go back to dancing. My main travel destinations are Latin America, so why not learn a dance I can do during my travels. I gradually learned the Latin dances of salsa, bachata and justngue. Then I fell in love with Cuban salsa. I’m not one to go to the gym so I find ways to do my exercise in other ways. When I dance, I am exercising without thinking that it is exercise.
