BMW HP2 Enduro
With Phil Aynsley
BMW has a long history of producing off-road flat-engined motorcycles of varying severity.
The G/S series then the GS series became mainstays and invented pretty much every modern ‘adventure bike’.
In 2005, the company introduced the Enduro 1200 HP2, although technically based on the contemporary GS model, it was in fact a very different monster, combining many lessons learned over many years. years compete in races like Paris-Dakar.
The BMW HP2 Enduro in these images is equipped with optional Supermoto wheels, instead of the off-road-oriented 21-inch front and 17-inch rear combination that the car comes standard with.
For starters, a brand new trellis chassis was used. In addition, BMW’s signature Telelever front suspension has been replaced with 45mm White Power upside-down telescopic forks.
For the first time for mass-produced motorcycles, an air-damped rear suspension was used. No springs or oil is used in this unit, only air. The travel of the front suspension is 270 mm and the rear 248 mm.
The engine is the ultimate evolution of the ‘oil head’ design and features internal modifications to reduce weight and increase power to 105hp announced at 7000rpm.
This engine was later used on the HP2 Sport and HP2 Megamoto road bikes with both having a more aggressive tone to suit the intended use.
The HP2 Enduro has a dry weight of 175 kg, 23 kg lighter than the R 1200 GS. Top speed is 210 km/h.
Production ceased in 2008, after three years.
The HP2 Enduro was followed by the supermoto-style HP2 Megamoto in 2007. The Megamoto had a balance shaft that made the engine smoother.
The Megamoto also makes more rattles, 113 hp to be exact, and sells for $28,400 in Australia.
Then HP2 peak comes next year in deliciousness Sports HP2 sold for $34,750 plus road costs when it hit Australian roads in late 2008 with 130 hp.
