Five boxing documentaries that should be made

BOXING is unlike any other sport. The drama of a fight week and a fight night can be extraordinary and absurd. But throughout its tumultuous history, boxing has found itself in the headlines for all the right reasons and all the wrong reasons. Documentaries and filmmakers are drawn to this sweet science for all of the above and more.

Next month, ‘Four Kings’ – a documentary looking back at the Lennox Lewis vs Frank Bruno fight and the rematch between Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank – will air on Amazon Prime and looks set to be another intriguing watch on the small screen.

But it’s not just fighters who get to tell their stories on camera. Today, it was announced that a documentary series about Eddie and Barry Hearn and the Matchroom empire will be airing on Netflix.

Boxing News Here are five more documentary ideas that fans should definitely watch.

Manny vs Mexico

Looking back at Manny Pacquiao’s nine fights against Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez. It would be great if all four could be in the same room together, where they could be interviewed about the fights, the results and their rivalry. A trip to Mexico to interview fans and media to get their opinions on Pacquiao could be eye-opening.

Scott Harrison’s Story

A Scottish featherweight fighting machine who could have gone on to fight some of the greatest featherweights of his time. Instead, he has spent more time in prison than in the boxing ring. Perhaps it is time to take a look at his life with Scott and those around him, ensuring balance along the way.

Chocolate

A look back at the life and career of Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez. A fan favourite and modern boxing legend who continues to box despite his career entering his 20sth year. Everyone loves Chocolaito.

Boxing and PEDs

We all know that boxing continues to be plagued by performance enhancing drugs, but where does it all start? Who is willing to come forward and talk about it? What do we know and what don’t we know? And how big a problem is it? This will surely require more than one episode.

Itchy fingertips

The three-part series follows three fighters at different stages of their careers, balancing work and fighting. For example, selling tickets in small arenas is a must, and few outside the sport know the toll this balancing act takes on fighters without a major TV promoter behind them.
