Explosion at Japanese port during Prime Minister Kishida’s visit, no casualties : NPR

SEOUL — Japanese authorities evacuated Prime Minister Fumio Kishida after hearing an explosion at the port where he was about to give a cryptic speech. There were no reports of injuries, and at least one person was detained.

Kishida is in Wakayama City, looking for a candidate in the upcoming by-election. Public broadcaster NHK reported that an object was thrown and there was an explosion accompanied by white smoke.

NHK video shows half a dozen security guards pinning a man in olive pants and sneakers to the ground, before dragging him away.

Japan updates the following VIP protection procedures assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe last July.

A police report following Abe’s shooting concluded that with better planning and security in place, Abe’s murder could have been prevented.
