EVx 2023: WAS 500 EV ambulance being evaluated by First Ambulance, to be tested for use in Malaysia
Join the ranks of electric passenger cars on display here paultan.org Electric Vehicle Expo (EVx 2023) is an EV ambulance study by private ambulance operator First Ambulance, which brought to life the WAS 500 zero-emissions box ambulance.
Starting with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter box van, the German specialist WAS applied an EV drivetrain to the body of the 5.5-ton box van and is powered by an 87 kWh battery pack that provides a battery range of up to 200 km. Charge with the built-in charger AC 22 kW via a Type 2 charger connection; In Europe, this EV ambulance has the option of fast charging DC 50 kW or 100 kW and has a published top speed of 120 km/h.
First Ambulance CEO Steven Penafort said the example shown here is a left-hand drive unit brought from Europe to Malaysia, however, the EV ambulance has not yet been approved for road use and so it is currently being evaluated on a static basis.
This EV ambulance is the only unit of its kind in Malaysia and First Malaysia plans to start testing the EV ambulance, although the timing is yet to be confirmed.
In Europe, where the WAS 500 electric ambulance is operating and serving medical response missions, it will be escorted by a second, internal combustion engine-powered ambulance, and this arrangement will likely be reflected when the EV ambulance is tested in Malaysia, Penafort said.
