Every Nintendo Switch game we played at Summer Game Festival 2024

Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble (June 25)

We’re just a few weeks away from our first all-new (non-mobile) product Super monkey ball game for over ten years and Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble looks… pretty good. With cutscenes featuring an adorable new monkey, tons of new levels, and a ton of multiplayer modes, this could be a hit with families this summer.

Otherwise… this is Super Monkey Ball as you know it. We’re excited to delve into the single-player levels, but we’re a little sad that the fan-favorite mini-games aren’t returning. It also brought challenges and we struggled to achieve some small “achievements”.

Fun fact, readers – this is Nintendo only to exclude, to expel We got to play at the show. Everything else will come to Switch And something else.

While waiting (TBA)

How about one WarioWare Is it all about waiting for things to happen?

We think that’s a pretty good summary of Meanwhile. It’s a set of ‘mini-games’ where you have to wait for things to happen. Waiting for the bus. Wait for the rain to stop. Wait for traffic to clear. But you don’t have to just sit there and wait. You can complete fun missions along the way like collecting ducks and getting run over by cars. Ah yes, getting hit by a car is cute and harmless…

According to the developers, the game will come to PC first, with Switch taking priority. Touch controls are not planned and movements have a feel small slow, but this kept us giggling throughout the game’s short 10 minutes.

growth (2024)

WayForward and Atari teamed up to create a series of iconic Atari movies (yarns) and spin it in a completely different direction. Spot on among the hundreds of nods to Atari’s history – such as arcade cabinet-based power-ups and bosses entirely framed around Atari games and you get Yars Rising.

It’s part Metroidvania, part stealth game, and part hacking game. You can hack the terminals to get new abilities for Emi, and the one ability we have allows Emi to shoot enemies. Another saw her doing a jetpack-like jump. The game also features WayForward’s classic style and humor; it’s extremely noisy and colorful.

2024 has been a banner year for Metroidvanias and there are still many more to come, but can Yars Rising stand out? We’re not too sure about this anytime soon but we’ll find out by the end of 2024 whether WayForward has its magic again.

We recently spoke with WayForward and Atari about this new collaboration, so check out that interview for more:
