Ford caused quite a bit of controversy when announced plans to produce electric crossover vehicles that will be called Mustang. For some people, no problem How good is the Ford Mustang Mach-E, just putting a badge on the car is a step too far. Overall, we don’t think it really matters, and you can call it the Mach-E if you want, but we understand. So it was a bit of a surprise when Ford CEO Jim Farley came out Some comments for Autocar which suggests he doesn’t consider the Mach-E a true Mustang either.
“We would never build a Mustang that wasn’t a Mustang,” Farley told Autocar. “For example, there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford. SUVs with the Mustang badge plastered on it. But can we make other Mustang body types – four-door or whatever? I believe we can do it, as long as these models have all the performance and style of the original versions.”
Now, you might look at that quote and think, “Wow! I love a sports sedan powered by a Mustang engine!” You’d also be right because in reality, a four-door Mustang would be awesome. However, let’s focus on the second sentence instead. By Ford standards, the Mustang Mach-E To be a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge on it. So has Ford built a Mustang that isn’t a real Mustang? Or is that statement just poorly worded?
He also said: “Some people think we can combine the Mustang with off-road driving – look at what Porsche did with the 911 Dakar and what Lamborghini has been doing. But I’m not so sure about that.” This is exciting because Ford has just announced development details for the Mustang Mach-E racing that’s the show More effort for terrain variation more than is probably necessary.
After the interview, Farley said: “One thing I can promise, however, is that we will never make an all-electric Mustang. I look at other pure electric power players like Formula E, and even companies like Rimac, and I don’t think that’s going to work for the Mustang. Great for other Fords – look at the worldwide success of the Transit – but not for the Mustang.”
Last time we checked, the Mustang Mach-E is indeed fully electric. And based on other comments he’s made, we’re pretty sure the only reasonable conclusion here is that Ford’s CEO doesn’t consider the Mustang Mach-E a real Mustang.
When asked for comment, a Ford spokesman said: “The important takeaway from Jim’s interview is that the Mustang isn’t going anywhere and has a very bright and exciting future ahead.”
