Euro 2024: UEFA clarifies Golden Boot rules with Kane, Olmo levels

BERLIN — UEFA says it will split the Euro 2024 Golden Boot among six players if Sunday’s final between England And Spain unable to produce a clear winner for the trophy — three years later Cristiano Ronaldo won the award at Euro 2020 despite having the same five goals as Czech Republic‘S Patrik Schick.

England captain Harry Kane and Spain moves forward Dani Olmo are two of six players with three goals each so far in the tournament as they head into the final in Berlin. Cody Gakpo (Netherlands), Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), Jamal Musiala (Germany) And Ivan Schranz (Slovakia) makes for a crowded ranking.

Jude Bellingham And Fabian Ruiz go into the final in pole position to lead the scoring charts having both scored two goals at Euro 2024, but Kane and Olmo are favourites to take the lead by taking their tally to at least four at the Olympiastadion.

But with no difference between the six players with three goals, UEFA have confirmed that the top scorer award will be shared equally unless one player can break the four-goal mark.

This policy marks a change from previous tournaments. Portugal Striker Ronaldo was announced as the winner for his assist and five goals at the pandemic-delayed Euro 2020. Schick, who has five goals equal to Ronaldo, was left out of the list as he had no assists at the tournament.

If no player scores a fourth goal at Euro 2024 on Sunday, three goals will be the lowest tally by a Golden Boot winner since Euro 2012 when Fernando Torres (Spain), Mario Gomez (Germany) and Alan Dzagoev (Russia) all finished the tournament with three goals.

Torres was awarded the Golden Boot that year because he played fewer minutes than players who scored three goals.
