Since appearing in the arena, Errol Spence Jr has stated that his number one goal is to become the undisputed world champion. Now, in just over two months, the Dallas native will have the opportunity to take it one step closer.
On April 16, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Spence Jr will attempt to unify his WBC and IBF belts with WBA belt holder, Yordenis Ugas.
“I have returned !!” Spence Jr. said on his Instagram page. “3 straps on the line.”
As for the 31-year-old unified champion, he has become inactive over the past few years due to a number of injuries. Since defeating former WBC titleholder Shawn Porter in September 2019, Spence Jr has been involved in a horrific rollover that threw his 147-pound sports car. Though many feared the worst, Spence Jr proved that despite the wreck, his skills were second to none, scoring a one-way decisive goal against Danny Garcia in the return match. again.
While Spence Jr was then prepared to face the future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao, the powerful nampaw was forced to withdraw from their competition due to a detached/broken left eye.
Then, with Spence Jr now out of the picture, Ugas stepped in to challenge Pacquiao for the night. Despite being seen as a sizable underdog, Ugas will go on to claim the most impressive victory of his career, while also bringing Pacquiao to retirement.
After his win, Ugas immediately turned his attention to his match against Spence Jr but was ordered by the WBA sanctioning body to participate in a four-man tournament. The Cuban-born champion was then instructed to take on Eimantas Stanionis but was allowed to begin negotiations with Spence Jr. instead Stanionis agreed to give up aside.
