A loud and consistent rumble can be heard in the space of a Dallas gym. As the shrill noise continued, Errol Spence Jr broke into a sweat as he exploded the heavy bag with head coach Derrick James standing close by.
Over the past few months, Spence Jr.’s relentless training regimen has, he believes, been necessary as he gets closer to his return to the ring. On April 16, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Spence Jr will attempt to defend his unified weight throne against WBA champion, Yordenis Ugas.
Not to get tired, Ugas also had to undergo an arduous training camp, when he wanted to prove the bettors wrong. While many believe it’s unlikely Spence Jr will be around anytime soon, the Dallas native wants Ugas to get all the credit in the world if he wins him over on April 16.
“If I lose, it’s because he’s better than me,” Spence Jr said on All Access. “It’s not just because I don’t train 100% or I’m not focused.”
The fact that Spence Jr. need to ramp up the intensity in his current training camp, out of a sense of gratitude. After a horrific car accident in 2019, Spence Jr was forced to spend more than a year on the sidelines. When he did come back, the fusion star made it look absolutely incredible against Danny Garcia, winning an ill-considered unanimity decision in December 2020.
A year later, Spence Jr suffered another setback, this time in the form of a detached retina in his right eye. Due to his latest injury, Spence Jr was forced to withdraw from his next, upcoming bout with Manny Pacquiao.
With traumatic accidents now seemingly in the background, Spence Jr is determined to prove that he is truly the best boxer the Korean weight division has to offer. Now, as Spence Jr nervously looks at the sand inside the hourglass, he believes he’s at his peak right now.
“I feel indestructible. I just felt like, another boxer can’t beat me.”
