Errol Spence said on a video posted by ES . News, “but it’s more of a legacy right now. It’s more about getting a huge payday. The undefeated WBA, IBF and WBC welterweight champion will soon face WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford in a battle to find out who will be the undisputed king of the weight class. However, 28-0 Texan Spence seems to have a pretty expansive view of things. Being undisputed is great, but there are other important issues.
“In the end,” he says in the video, “you see a lot of fighters, even in the Hall of Fame, either they die in poverty or they go broke when they enter the Hall of Fame.” Sure enough, more than a few legendary boxers ended up on the poorer side of the street. Some have been robbed by unscrupulous associates, some have been victims of their own life decisions, some have suffered from illness, and some have simply fallen on hard times. However, in this day and age, famous boxers can claim huge sums of money.
Spence, who is sure to make a lot of money going up against Crawford in July, said: “For me, it’s all about being financially savvy, “and just making sure I’m completely on point. my finances, so when all is said and done, I can retire peacefully (and) still be able to take care of my kids, still be able to do the things I did when I was in boxing.” Crawford has certainly made a fortune throughout his career, going up against the likes of Kell Brook, Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia. However, all of those paydays may not equal the kind of paydays he’ll face with Crawford.
It’s worth remembering, however, that Spence is actually interested in more than just money. As he himself says in the video: “It’s about legacy.” Spence’s offering of “legacy” before “a huge payday” speaks for itself. This is not a man who just wants to make money. If that’s the case, he could do quite well for himself battling lesser talents than Crawford. He may not be making the same amount of money he will now, but he’ll do pretty well for himself nonetheless. There are really boxers who have worked hard to trade just for income. Spence doesn’t seem like that kind of person, though he certainly wants to be well-paid and well-paid.
And honestly, he deserves it.
