Several initiatives related to COP27 are underway in Egypt: they include projects related to sustainable transport, waste recycling, women’s health, transition to clean energy, sustainable cities, adaptation measures in the water and agriculture sectors, and the link between peace and climate.
Dr Samir Tantawy, climate change expert at the United Nations Development Programme, said: “The Egyptian government recognizes a great responsibility in organizing a successful conference.”UNDP). “The summit needs to demonstrate the damage caused by the climate crisis, especially in developing countries. For example, the government of Aswan, in southern Egypt, experienced storms, snow and heavy rain for the first time. Developing countries need to be compensated fairly.”
In addition to COP27, Egypt is working towards a national climate strategy for 2050, based on reducing emissions in all sectors and adapting to potential changes in climate – in agriculture, water resources , coastal areas and health.

Egyptian authorities are witnessing preparatory workshops for the Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The national strategy also aims to bring civil society, government and citizens together, at the local, regional and national levels. Several civil society organizations are participating in seminars and talks to raise awareness of the summit, in the hope that it will help Egypt achieve its strategic climate goals.
In preparation for the Climate Summit, the regional government of the Red Sea Administration, in collaboration with a number of other state organizations, is organizing a series of events aimed at raising awareness about the interrelationships between the two countries. environment and sustainability. These workshops will continue until November and the opening of the Conference.
Egypt’s hosting of COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh is seen as a great opportunity to promote international climate action and unify the needs of African and developing countries, especially when it comes to financing and adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
