Edgerunners Update Brings Together Cyberpunk 2077 and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – PlayStation.Blog

We here at CD PROJEKT RED are excited for the launch of the Edgerunners Update – and with our first anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners coming (September 13!), we think this will be the time! perfect spot to share some additional insight into what the two releases have in common. Believe me, it’s not just the name.

In Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, we first meet David Martinez when he was just an unlucky street kid peddling black market (XBD) peddlers to help him and his mother Gloria get through. Her bright yellow coat – passed down to David – became the visual foundation of the anime, so it’s no surprise that we chose to include it in the latest update.

Franchise & Lore designer Patrick Mills, who worked on selecting items that would bring it from the anime into Cyberpunk 2007, agrees:

“David’s jacket is an obvious choice, as it’s an iconic element of the anime that has a lot of meaning to it. We’re happy for people to pick up in-game items and feel connected to the anime’s story in a tactile way. For those who haven’t seen the anime, I hope they enjoy it as a cool new coat to wear around town and pose in Photo Mode, but for those who watch the anime and know the plot, I hope Hope it’s another bridge between the world of the show and the world of the game. “

This Legend level item is made even more appealing thanks to the introduction of Wardrobe, our transformation system. Dropping a stylish piece of gear for something with better armor always hurts, but now players can dress for a dystopian future without sacrificing their builds.

The coat isn’t the only thing left over from David’s explosive and bloody time in the Night City. Players can also discover a new weapon – a shotgun called “Guts” that is capable of delivering a powerful punch in the real world thanks to DualSense’s Adaptive Trigger function introduced in the update. previous next generation. Combining the two worlds thoughtfully and organically, from item descriptions to dialogue, was always a top priority for us when we were planning this update.

Writer Rafał Babraj was clear about his approach from the start:

“We wanted to embed characters and stories from the anime into our games as immersive as possible, and I think we found a fun narrative way to do that. But we also wanted to make it a bit mysterious, teasing just enough of the anime to pique the players’ curiosity and push them to discover what happened to David and his crew. in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. We looked at the personalities of anime characters and tried to reflect that in the way they communicate in the game or in the descriptions of the items that belong to them. “

Babraj also teased, “These may be two different stories, but V and David really have a lot in common – exactly what players and viewers will have to discover for themselves!”

Players can also look forward to a brand new quest, one that leads to David’s coat of arms and ties the two worlds together properly. Mission director Paweł Sasko worked with his team to ensure that the game and anime fit together:

“Cyberpunk 2077 and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners share the same quirky, intriguing world, but there are glaring differences in the graphic styles of the two, so we had to come up with interesting and appropriate solutions. about how to connect them together. I asked Mission Designer Danisz Markiewicz to see the anime and pitch narrative solutions that would build on the story told in Edgerunners and connect it well to the game. He suggested going the brave route and practically using a clip from the anime in the game! I loved that solution and we started exploring our options for how to do it. Thanks to several other developers, our partners at Netflix, and a little more creativity, we made it happen. Braindance itself has two little secrets and I’m curious to read it online as our players discover it.”

When it comes to creating links between two stories, the process is not just a one-way street, but something organic and collaborative. In the words of Sasko:

“Studio Trigger has done an incredible job of bringing the Night City to life in the anime, and those who know the game well can easily spot where the important events take place. What I found fascinating was that at first, Trigger was inspired by the game, and then we were inspired by their remarkable work as we began to enrich the game in the Edgerunners Update. That’s why the layout of braindance, gear, and all the other little events throughout the mission are tied to the plot of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in a very intentional and purposeful way. The mission is designed to express our gratitude to fans of Cyberpunk 2077 and the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. “

The anime-related content we’ve highlighted here is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Edgerunners Update. There’s plenty more in store for gamers, such as a playable Roach Race mini-game, additional weapons, quests, and the ability to pose Siblings in Photo Mode.
