There seems to be a huge amount of frustration for Eddy Reynoso whenever David Benavidez is mentioned in chats.
All in all, Canelo Alvarez, Reynoso’s current top boxer, is considered the best in the sport. Although many have struggled to pick a worthy opponent, Benavidez has emerged as a true fighter who can push Alvarez to his limits.
In recent weekends, both Alvarez and Benavidez have had explosive comebacks. On November 6, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Alvarez settled business with former 168-pound belt holder Caleb Plant, stopping him in the 11th round. By doing so, Alvarez became the champion. the undisputed first super average of all time.
A week later, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, Benavidez scored his own knockout victory. That night, the two-time former super-middleweight titleholder easily stopped Kyrone Davis in the seventh round of their confrontation.
In terms of the fashions that Benavidez dominates, the 24-year-old is seen as one of the top challenges for Alvarez and his super-middleweight. However, while Reynoso admits that Benavidez is incredibly talented, looking at his brief resume, he doesn’t believe Benavidez did enough to earn a spot at Alvarez.
“David Benavidez is a good fighter,” Reynoso told FOX Deportes. “But for me, he hasn’t achieved what people think. I respect him but how many champions has he beaten? How many defenses did he make? How many merges did he complete?
Despite Reynoso questioning the level of opposition Benavidez faces, he is currently ranked number one in the WBC’s sanctioning body. With that said, he won’t be on the track to face Alvarez anytime soon.
Since winning every world title at 168 pounds, Alvarez chose to skip defending his crown in his next ring appearance. He also decided not to switch to the light weight class. Instead, Alvarez has set his sights on Ilunga Makabu and his cruiser WBC crown.
Although nothing is credible, Mauricio Sulaiman, the President of the WBC sanctioning body, has agreed to allow Alvarez to challenge Makabu in May or June 2022. If Alvarez succeeds, he will become First Mexican-born boxer to win world titles in five different weight divisions.
