Duke is unbeaten at home in Scheyer’s first season


DukeJon Scheyer’s Jon Scheyer made history on Tuesday, becoming the first ACC head coach to go undefeated at home in his first season.

Blue Devil defeated State of NC 71-67, improving to 15-0 this season at Cameron Indoor Stadium. This was their last home game of the campaign, as they finished the season with a scoreline North Carolina on Saturday, before attending the ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament.

“We just wanted to finish the game and win, obviously defend our home half and go unbeaten all season at home. I’m glad we did,” said the young defender. Jeremy Roach speak.

“It means a lot. Thank you to all the Crazies. They did a great job, camping outdoors, supporting us all year. They gave us energy, encouragement. push that we needed and it was an enjoyable ride with them.”

This is the first time since 2013-14 Duke is unbeaten at home and the Blues are the first ACC team to lead at home since then. State of Florida in the year 2019-20.

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Duke is now 18 seasons unbeaten at home since the ACC was formed in 1953-54 – the most in the league. Eleven of those seasons took place under Mike Krzyzewski, but it took the legendary coach six seasons before finishing the season without losing at home.

“I personally feel that we can’t lose a single game here,” transfer freshman Kyle Filipowski speak. “That’s just the mindset I’ve been aiming for; that’s what we’ll continue to do now.”

Scheyer was named Krzyzewski’s replacement in June 2021, but he did not take over until Krzyzewski’s retirement after last season. The 35-year-old Illinois player played for Krzyzewski from 2006 to 2010 and then spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at Duke from 2014 to 2022.

Duke’s win over NC State on Tuesday was the Blue Devils’ fifth straight win. Roach leads with 20 points, his ninth double scoring performance in the past 10 games. Trio of freshmen Mark Mitchell, Director Tyrese and Filipowski both scored double figures, with Filipowski also picking up 14 rebounds.

The Blue Devils have an overall score of 22-8 and 13-6 in the ACC, predicted to be the 6th seed in Joe Lunardi’s latest Leaderboard.
