Dr. Schivel the Millionaire on the Way Back

top sprinter Dr. Schivel has been sidelined since the 2022 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) last March, had a second work on the way back on February 19 for coach Mark Glatt.

1st place winner and runner-up Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) in 2021 drilled three runs in: 37.40 2/5 on Sunday at Santa Anita . Park.

Dr. Schivel returned from a trip to the Middle East with a bone bruise and was taken to the ranch in July to rest and recuperate. He galloped in Santa Anita this winter before returning to his desk last week.

“We’ve had to go very slowly with him, but hopefully things start off pretty well here,” Glatt said.

The trainer added that he does not have a timetable for Dr. Schivel’s return to the race. Glatt notes her 5-year-old son Violence may have to miss a scheduled job this coming weekend due to heavy rain forecast in the area.

“Hopefully this is the last storm we have because it really freaks you out when a horse is about to rest like this,” Glatt said. “It’s important that those horses stay on schedule. Horses that have run in the right direction they can overtake with less training. But for a horse you’re trying to get in shape, it’s tough.”

Dr. Schivel shows a 5-2-2 record in 10 starts with earnings of $1,076,500 for owners of Red Baron’s Barn, Rancho Temescal, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and William A. Branch.
