Last-second agreement was reached in the Dominion Voting System’ historical defamation lawsuit against Fox News, the parties announced Tuesday in court.

“The parties settled their case,” said Judge Eric Davis of Delaware Superior Court. “Your presence here…is extremely important. And without you, the parties wouldn’t be able to resolve their situation,” the judge told jurors before firing them.

The settlement was apparently brokered while the trial was due to open in Wilmington, Delaware.

After being sworn in before a grand jury the previous Tuesday, an unexplained hour-long delay halted court proceedings, which once again fueled widespread speculation. that a deal is being done quietly.

What does this mean: The last-minute deal means that the closely watched case is closed and there will be no further trial. By settling with Dominion, influential Fox News executives and prominent figures on the air will be exempt from witness about their 2020 election, which was filled with lies about voter fraud.

The details of the settlement are not immediately available and may never be made public.

More information about the case: In its lawsuit, Dominion asked Fox News for $1.6 billion in damages. The right-wing network argued fiercely in pre-trial proceedings that the number was inflated and don’t come close to accurately capture the potential losses Dominion could incur as a result of Fox’s 2020 broadcasts.

Fox News and Fox Corporation – its parent company, which is also the defendant – say they have never defamed Dominion, and say the incident is a futile attack on press freedom. They deny Dominion’s claim that they promoted these election conspiracies to salvage ratings that are falling after the 2020 election.

While the Dominion affair is now over, Fox News still faces a second big defamation lawsuit from Smartmatic, another voting technology company that was smeared on Fox shows after the 2020 election. That case is still under investigation and isn’t expected to go to trial anytime soon. .
