Dogs Decide to Call 911 Sixteen Times in 30 Minutes, Leading to Hilarious Police Response

911 calls are often associated with emergencies and dire situations, but a recent incident in Lakeville, Minnesota added a heartwarming and interesting twist to the story. This particular case involved a series of calls to emergency services, but instead of hearing a distressed person on the line, the dispatcher heard the barking of two dogs. This unexpected scenario quickly escalated into a cute but confusing situation that caught the attention of both local police and the community, resulting in an interesting story.

After receiving multiple 911 calls from a residence within a short period of time, two officers were dispatched to the location to investigate. When they arrived, they found the house empty. The only people inside were two energetic and enthusiastic dogs who seemed happy to see new faces.

Officer Emiles Bares, one of the responding officers, shared his unusual experience with Fox 9. “It was just a little weird. Usually people come to the door. Seeing two dogs get so agitated is not something I see often,” he commented. The officers initially thought it might be an accidental call and were about to leave when they received more information.

Dispatch informed officers that there had been not one or two, but 16 911 calls from the residence. This revelation prompted a more thorough investigation, as it was clear that something unusual was going on at the home.

To gain access and investigate further, officers made contact with the homeowner, who was at work at the time. With permission to enter the home, officers were once again greeted by two friendly dogs. Inside, they began piecing together the events that led to the repeated emergency calls.

Officer Roberts provided details of the situation. “I checked to see if they wanted to come out, but they weren’t interested. They were more interested in being petted. I went to his office, which had a cell phone. The phone was on Emergency Call only. So theoretically, a dog could dial 911 by pushing the screen with its paw,” he explained.

Officers deduced that the dogs, possibly left alone and feeling restless or bored, made the call by interacting with the phone.

In a lighthearted attempt to get to the bottom of the mystery, Fox 9 attempted to interview the dogs. However, the dogs seemed more interested in sniffing the microphone than commenting on their mischievous actions. The incident brought smiles and giggles to many as the story spread.

The homeowner, upon learning of the situation, expressed his amusement and vowed to prevent similar incidents in the future. He stated that he had learned his lesson and would ensure that his phone was kept out of reach of his dogs in the future.

While this story may seem unique, it raises an interesting question: Can your dog call 911? The answer, surprisingly, is yes. There are plenty of cases of pets accidentally calling 911, and some are even trained to do so on purpose.

Sign the petition today: Neighbors hear abuse through walls

A Texas resident repeatedly abused his dog to the point that neighbors could hear its screams through the walls.

A concerned woman has been trying to report apparent evidence of animal cruelty to authorities for more than a year—but the police have done nothing. Two years ago, the woman began hearing dogs screaming in pain in one of her neighbors’ apartment buildings.

Melody Jackson of the Animal-Computer Interaction Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology is at the forefront of such initiatives. She is working to train dogs to use touchscreens to contact emergency services on behalf of the elderly or those living with medical challenges. This innovative approach could one day help our furry friends become lifesavers in critical situations.

As technology continues to advance, the ability to train service animals to assist in emergencies is expanding. This Lakeville incident may be a humorous anecdote today, but it hints at a future where dogs and other pets could play a vital role in emergency response systems. For now, pet owners may want to keep their phones out of paw reach to avoid surprise 911 calls.
