Dog Walks 4 Miles to Find Help for Owner and Siblings Caught in Accident

As the old saying goes, a dog is a man’s best friend. But this dog won. His extraordinary actions in today’s story take that relationship to a whole new level. A 62-year-old man named Brandon Garrett was traveling with his four dogs to a campsite when disaster struck. While driving on a forest service road in Baker County, Oregon, about four miles from their destination, Brandon lost control of his truck, sending it careening into a ravine. The crash was severe, but one of his dogs, Blue, despite being injured, managed to escape the wreckage.

Blue then set out on a four-mile journey to find help. Having been to the campsite with Brandon before, Blue remembered the location and knew that someone would be there to help his owner at the site. The journey was not easy. Blue had glass stuck in his mouth, making the journey painful and difficult. However, Blue’s unwavering love and loyalty to Brandon kept him going.

When Blue finally arrived at the campsite, those present, including Brandon’s friend, immediately sensed that something was wrong. The fact that Blue was alone, along with his injuries, confirmed their worst fears. Acting quickly, Brandon’s friend contacted other friends and family members, and together they began a search that lasted all night. It wasn’t until morning that they found the wrecked truck.

When Brandon’s brother, Tyree Garrett, witnessed the crash firsthand, he feared the worst. He believed his brother might not survive. However, the search team remained hopeful and called for professional help due to the rugged terrain surrounding the crash site. Assistance soon arrived from several agencies, including the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Baker County Search and Rescue, Halfway Ambulance, and Pine Valley Rural Fire.

Sheriff Travis Ash was one of the first to act, along with a search dog. As he was making his way down the creek, he suddenly heard a faint voice. It was Brandon Garrett, screaming for help—he was alive! Brandon had been lying about 100 yards from the wreckage all night, enduring freezing temperatures and pouring rain.

Once located, Sheriff Ash administered first aid while volunteers from Pine Valley Rural Fire and the U.S. Forest Service used chainsaws to clear a path for rescue crews. “Members of the Baker County Ropes Search and Rescue Team set up rescue equipment and began the difficult task of reaching Garrett,” the Baker County Sheriff’s Office shared in a statement. Facebook Post“Once the rescue team was able to reach him, they brought him in and secured him in a rescue basket.”

Authorities have charged a New Jersey man with multiple counts of animal cruelty after discovering several dogs in his care were living in dangerous and violent conditions. Under current law, there is nothing to prevent the man from owning, possessing, or caring for other animals in the future.

Brandon was then taken to the Search and Rescue team and paramedics before being flown by Life Flight helicopter to an area hospital. The Baker County Sheriff’s Office was pleased with the successful outcome of the complex rescue mission. They also confirmed that three other dogs were found at the crash site and are now safe.

Thank you Blue, for being such a special dog and such a good boy! Aren’t dogs the best?!
