July 1, 2024 – Viva Raw LLC, Hillsborough, NC voluntarily recalls dog and cat foods, including Viva Turkey for Dogs Ground, Viva Turkey for Dogs Chunked, Viva Turkey for Cats, Viva Pure Turkey, and Viva Beef & Turkey for Puppies, all manufactured under Lot 21244 because this lot, which includes these five products, is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria and may pose a health risk to humans and pets.

Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in animals that eat contaminated products. Humans can be exposed to this pathogen through a variety of routes, including handling contaminated products, contact with animals that have eaten contaminated products, and/or contact with surfaces that have touched contaminated food, such as bowls, utensils, or countertops. The risk of illness in humans is from Listeria monocytogenes bacteria Contaminated pet food increases if people do not wash their hands thoroughly after preparing food or handling pets, or do not thoroughly clean contaminated surfaces.

Healthy people get infected Listeria monocytogenes bacteria You may experience some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, aches and pains, fever, and diarrhea. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria The infection can spread through the bloodstream to the nervous system (including the brain), leading to meningitis and other potentially fatal illnesses. Pregnant women are particularly susceptible. Listeria infection, which can lead to miscarriage. Young people, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection. People who show signs of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria infection after exposure to the recalled product or pets that have eaten the recalled product should contact their healthcare provider.

Listeria monocytogenes bacteria Disease in livestock is rare and infected livestock may exhibit symptoms such as mild to severe diarrhea, loss of appetite, fever, neurological, muscular and respiratory signs, abortion, depression, shock and death. Livestock exposed to contaminated food may become infected without showing symptoms. Infected livestock, even if they do not show symptoms, can act as carriers and transmit the disease. L. monocytogenes through their feces and saliva into the indoor environment and into people and other pets in the household. If your pet has eaten the recalled product and has symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection, please contact your veterinarian.

Products are distributed directly to consumers in all fifty states and the District of Columbia.

Only products from Lot 21244 are affected, Viva Raw is notifying all customers who received any Turkey or Beef & Turkey Puppy products between May 16 and June 28, 2024.

To date there have been no reports of illness associated with this shipment.

Product is delivered as 1 lb frozen bricks in clear vacuum sealed packaging. Please see attached product label for example. There is no expiration date for these products.

The issue was discovered during a facility inspection conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA). FDA tested samples of Viva Turkey for dogs and found samples from Lot 21244 tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. All products manufactured in Lot 21244 were scheduled to be destroyed. However, we later learned that some products from this lot were inadvertently removed from storage.

If you find that you have products from Lot 21244Please contact Viva Raw at [email protected] for a refund for any remaining product—you should then destroy the food in a manner that is inaccessible to children, pets, and wildlife. Do not feed the recalled product to pets or any other animals.

FDA People are advised not to touch contaminated food products with their bare hands. While wearing gloves or using a tissue, place contaminated food in a sealed plastic bag and throw it in the trash. Areas that may have come into contact with contaminated product should be disinfected. Do not sell or donate recalled products.
