Discover why shooting in extreme lighting makes you a better photographer

Being a photographer means finding new and more creative ways to shoot. The best way to do this is to challenge the way you would normally do things and combine it with small changes, such as shooting at a different time of day.

Jeremy Payne is an Australian landscape photographer. Usually, beginner landscape photographers will get up really early at sunrise or stay up later at sunset to capture photos covered in a brilliant golden glow. This is great advice for beginners, because the gentle style is right for you.

However, if you’re looking for a new challenge, Payne recommends trying it out a bit and shooting in harsher conditions mid-day. This is great advice, as it still focuses on the strengths you may have built up when shooting landscapes but challenges you to see the same scenes in a different way.

Payne dives deeper into how he processes images after he’s taken them, and offers practical suggestions on how you can do the same. However, in his experience, he even challenged himself to do something different from what he recommends as the thing to do for most post-processing beginners (you will seen while watching videos).

While this video focuses on landscape photography, the advice given can be applied to any genre of photography. It’s important to practice and develop your skill set. If you find yourself in a place where you’re not challenged, making a small change to the way you shoot can be a great way to add another layer to your image – in this case, shoot. at a different time of day than what you might have done or learned in the traditional way.
