Did Gervonta Davis do enough to climb the list?

Lightweight rival Gervonta Davis had another knockout on Saturday in Washington, DC, this match being the ninth injury time of the previously unbeaten Hector Luis Garcia.

Victory underscores what a growing number of observers believe about “The Tank”: that he’s one of the best in the business.

But will his performance be enough to lift Davis – number 10 coming into the match – higher on the weight list?

No.

Garcia is hugely popular, having overtaken Chris Colbert and then Roger Gutierrez to win the junior lightweight title last year. However, he gained weight to face Davis, which made an already difficult challenge almost impossible and limited the meaning of victory.

So Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) stayed…for now.

He and Ryan Garcia (23-0.19 KOs) agreed to meet at the 136-pound weight class in April. This Garcia isn’t on the weight list but he is a highly respected all-rounder with the same punching power as Davis.

Also, Ryan Garcia might be naturally bigger than Davis. His last two fights were in the junior weight class, which Davis had fought once.

Victory over Davis’ fellow social media star will carry more weight than his win over Hector Garcia, although there’s no guarantee we’ll see any movement under any circumstances.

First, let’s see if Davis and Ryan Garcia are actually facing each other. And then let’s see how the fight goes.

Pound-for-pound next up? No. 12 Artur Beterbiev is expected to defend his three light heavyweight belts against the underrated Anthony Yarde on January 28 in London (ESPN+).

Here’s what the list looks like at the moment:
