Designer Jeremy Scott, Hyundai creates costumes from car parts

I’m sure most of you, our Jalopnik readers, don’t know who Jeremy Scott is, and that’s okay. His work may go far beyond your field. But if I could equate the famous fashion designer’s eclectic nature, rate it on Amazon Prime perform cuttingand Moschino’s former creative director for a car brand, he would lean towards the brainchild between Elton John and, as my colleague Collin Woodard suggests, a spy. If you need a broader picture, Scott’s The fashion collection includes colorful, playful, edgy and whimsical pieces, which crosses the line between bold everyday wear and bold pieces. As Jalops, we love it.

Now, let’s take that approach, but make all the fashion collection items out of scrap auto parts. The possibilities could be like Scott’s latest collaboration with Hyundai as part of the automaker’s Re:Style 2023.

One of the focal points of the 2023 “style initiative” collection is a floor-length cape made entirely of wiring from the vehicle’s electrical system — including the chest shield. Another skirt is made up of “chained” pieces of the rearview mirror and rearview mirror – while another includes the wipers. According to CNN, fashion show avant-garde pieces — or as Scott put it, “haute car-ture” — all consist of car scraps, but if worn out, they can all easily fit at a red carpet event or gala dinner (though Scott told CNN that would be quite difficult). It may be more of a gala or haute couture showcase, but these are designs by a man who has dressed Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Madonna and Bjork. The lines to cross on the red carpet have about non-existent.

Anyhow, while you may be as much concerned about this as you are about people making money from seat belts (which is quite interesting), the important thing here is to keep the conversation going and collaborate on ideas related to sustainability — taking advantage of what we already have. Most car companies, including Hyundai, are working to achieve sustainability goals in the coming decades. But in addition to creating new, energy-efficient cars, part of the process has to be recycling, or in this case “recycling,” the things we already produce. If a designer can make a polka dot dress out of miles of wires in your car, what else can we create with those resources to prevent them from sitting in landfill in the next few centuries?

Scott’s designs may not be the most practical for everyday wear — that’s the highlight of this particular collaboration — but his designs and unique approach have always impressed the world. fashion world. Now, this special collection opens up the world of possibilities that we can do with the piles of rubbish, scraps and waste that society constantly generates, especially in the automotive sector.
