The Dancer broncos could get a new owner as soon as this month for what is believed to be the most expensive sale in sports history at around $4.5 billion.
A second round of bidding for the franchise will take place on Monday from potential buyers.
The Pat Bowlen Trust will have to accept the winning bid, and NFL Owners will need to approve the sale, possibly in July, of the group that has been in the Bowlen family for nearly four decades.
Broncos’ price tag is expected to surpass last month’s $3.1 billion in sales Chelsea FC, one of the blue ribbon teams of European football, with an alliance led by the US, headed by Los Angeles Dodgers part owner Todd Boehly.
According to the report, Boehly was among investors with one of five finalists invited to bid for the Broncos by Monday’s deadline. Another is Walmart heiress Rob Walton, who is considered a favorite because his personal fortune is estimated at $60 billion.
Freshman head coach Nathaniel Hackett protested when asked Monday during off-season practice if he could keep up with a sales process that could close at the end of the month.
“My job is to get the team ready and teach the systems and teach them to come together as a team and help them play better,” says Hackett. “I know it’s obviously a big, huge deal. But for us, it’s a win no matter who owns the team, so I’m delighted.”
After the first round of bidding, the finalists were invited to tour the team’s facilities and dig deeper into the franchise’s finances. Hackett said he has met most of the billionaires who bid.
“After talking to everyone, I think they all have a great passion and want to be a part of this tournament, and they want to be part of a team – and I think that’s what’s really beautiful,” Hackett said.
“They want to come in to win, and they want to do something great here. And so wherever we are, I think we’ll be very grateful.”
The Pat Bowlen Trust has run the franchise for several years, and last year the club was put up for sale after Hall of Famer Pat Bowlen’s children could not agree on a successor to their father.
Bowlen died in 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, a month after he was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame.
