Popular podcaster Deborah James has been moved to home health care for terminal bowel cancer after telling followers she doesn’t know “how much longer I have.”
The host of the BBC’s You, Me And The Big C podcast said the previous six months had been “heartbreaking”, but she was surrounded by “a lot of love” and “no regrets”.
James was diagnosed with the condition in 2016 and since then, she’s kept her nearly 300,000 Instagram followers up to date with her treatments, with candid posts about progress. and her diagnosis.
On December 14, 2021, she marked 5 years since her diagnosis, writing on Instagram: “I fully know I shouldn’t have lived to write this today.”
But in a new post on Monday, she said: “The message I never wanted to write. We tried everything, but my body simply didn’t play the ball.
“My intensive care has stopped and I’m now moving into hospice care at home, with my wonderful family around me and the focus on making sure I’m pain-free and spending time with them.
“No one knows how long I have left, but I can’t walk, I sleep most days, and most of the things I take for granted are futile dreams.”
‘No regret’
She added that she had “no stone left unturned” in search of a treatment, but even a “magical new breakthrough” wouldn’t make a difference.
Sharing links with charities including Cancer Research UK, Bowel Cancer UK and Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, she asked supporters to donate and “buy me a drink to see me out of this world”.
She added: “Right now for me, it’s all about taking time each day, one step at a time, and being grateful for another sunrise.
“My whole family is around me and we’ll be jumping through this together, sunbathing and laughing (I’m going to cry!!) every time we can!
“You all are incredible, thank you for playing your part in my journey.
“No regrets. Enjoy life x Deborah.”
You, Me and Big C have also been hosted by news host Rachel Bland. She died in 2018 after being diagnosed with breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes.
