De La Hoya Rips with Canelo twice in deleted social media posts
Oscar De La Hoya, sixth-place world champion and former promoter of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, has had his say on the latest Mexican battle with Gennady Golovkinand he was less impressed.
Boxing legend De La Hoya previously promoted ‘Canelo’ until fall out in 2020 resulted in the £1 superstar being released from his contract by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotion. Having led the first two matches between Alvarez and Golovkin, De La Hoya showed great interest in the third and final match between the two opponents.
However, the 49-year-old insists he fell asleep at the event, despite being in Las Vegas. De La Hoya took to Instagram to joke that he was only awake because his girlfriend, TV reporter Holly Sonders, ‘grabbed him on a**’.
After the match ended, the former middleweight champion was Twitter to express his disappointment about the main event and dig deeper into his former warrior. In a rambling post, De La Hoya claimed that Golovkin was now too old for a trilogy fight.
“The truth is that everyone is afraid to tell the truth. The struggle [Canelo-Golovkin] was af **** dud. GGG is as old as f***, and Canelo can’t keep Hopkins’ jockstrap”
The tweet has been deleted. Ironically, now what plays out at the top of De La Hoya’s feed is a message of good wishes to both boxers that he posted before the event.
Many in the boxing community were overwhelmed with Golovkin’s performance in the battle of such a historic trio of rivals, and it seems a pity that this will be the last part of their story.
There have been rumors of his retirement, although ‘Triple G’ has assured fans that it is not in his immediate plans. After all, there are many opponents, including Chris Eubank Jrwho believe that they have defeated the Kazakh boxer, and therefore still have great battles to be fought.
