– START OF CHASE –

Excellent innings from LSG, K. L. Rahul leading the way with a magnificent 77. Rahul’s innings had everything: graft, innovation, enterprise, surprise, dexterity, deft touches, and power. Hooda played excellently as well. Both of Capitals’ losses here were after a bucketful of runs had been scored by the opposition. Chasing these many will be a difficult task. Join us, for the run chase, in a bit.

Deepak Hooda: “I’m having fun playing at No. 3. It is hot but we’re used to playing in this heat. The pitch is a good one but the slower balls are stopping a bit after pitching. I’m sticking to my process. We were taking calculated risks. It’s a challenging total.”

LSG 196/3 in 20 overs: Last over of the innings, to be bowled by Mustafizur. He bowls a full delivery outside off-stump, it’s squeezed out to deep point by Krunal Pandya. Two runs are picked up as there’s a fumble by the fielder.

Wide. And wide again. He’s bowling too wide outside the off-stump. The bowler switches to around the wicket. Low full toss to the left hander, driven to deep extra cover for two runs. Yorker outside the off-stump, squeezed out to deep point for a single. Stoinis gets a half-volley on middle-stump and he tees off! Hits a six straight down the ground – narrowly evades the sight screen! LSG in the 190s.

Slower ball, low full toss outside the off-stump, driven by Stoinis to sweeper cover for a single. Yorker outside the off-stump. Dug out by Krunal, and a single is picked up. Target for Capitals: 196.

LSG 180/3 in 19 overs: Shardul comes on to bowl his final over. Rahul picks up a single on the first ball. Then a wide down the leg side by Shardul. He’s bowled quite a few wides today.

Full delivery to Stoinis, driven to extra cover for a single. Half-volley outside off-stump, Rahul tries a belligerent stroke, but the ball goes to third man for a six! Off a thickish outside edge.Oh and out! At the boundary at sweeper cover! The fielder there jumped to pluck it. It would have gone for a six otherwise. Rahul goes. What a knock. He smashed a full length delivery.

Krunal Pandya is the new batter. Shardul bowls another wide. Short of a length on leg-stump, Krunal clumsily plays the ball to midwicket and picks up two runs. Short of a length again, and Krunal plays the ball to mid-on and picks up a single.

LSG 167/2 in 18 overs: Mustafizur to bowl his third over. Is it dropped? Stoinis flicks on a half-volley on middle-stump to deep midwicket, but the fielder spills it! Rahul gets a similar delivery and he carved the ball out to deep point. Another single. Short of a length to Stoinis, who pulls hard to deep midwicket. Single.

Oh and what a stroke! Yorker on middle stump, Rahul plays the reverse-scoop! Four through third man, the ball goes past the fielder at short third man. Drives to cover to pick up a single. Wide of off-stump, Stoinis gets a bat on it. But no run.

LSG 159/2 in 17 overs: Sakariya comes on to bowl his final over.

Yorker on off-stump. Squeezed out to cover by Rahul for a single. Yorker again, this time it’s wide outside the off-stump. Left alone by Stoinis. WIDE. That brings up the 150 for LSG. Half-volley to Stoinis, who drives to extra cover for a single. Half-volley outside off-stump, and it’s carved away to deep extra cover for six runs! A lovely stroke from Rahul. Yorker, squeezed out to point for a single.

Slower delivery outside the off-stump, Stoinis tries to play the cut but is beaten. Too quick on the stroke, deceived by the lack of pace. Full, on middle-stump, flicked away to deep midwicket for a single.

LSG 148/2 in 16 overs: A half-volley on leg-stump by Kuldeep, and Rahul gently strokes the ball to deep midwicket for a single. A slip in place for Kuldeep as he bowls to Stoinis. On a good length; Stoinis, off the front foot, drives back tot he bowler. Then stays back in his crease to negotiate a slightly shorter delivery. No run. Makes room for himself but can’t find the gap.

Short, coming into the right hander. Stoinis lofts the ball to deep midwicket, but there’s not so much force on the stroke so he doesn’t hole out to the man stationed there. One run. Rahul plays a sweep to short fine leg for a single.

LSG 145/2 in 15 overs: Rahul lands his knee on the ground for a belligerent hit – smashes a delivery from Shardul to deep midwicket for a single. Hooda slogs, too, and picks up two runs.

And out! Against the run of play. Hooda receives a full delivery and digs it out to the bowler! That wasn’t a bump ball. Didn’t bounce. Went straight to the hands of the bowler. An abrupt end to an excellent innings.

Marcus Stoinis is the new batter, he is off the mark with a boundary. Gets a good-length delivery outside off-stump, and nicely guides the ball to the boundary at extra cover. Stays in his crease and drives the next delivery back to the bowler. Four more! A half-volley on leg-stump, helped on its way to fine leg by the batter. The ball evades the diving wicketkeeper. A shout for lbw by the bowler but no entertained by the umpire. Leg byes signalled. Another expensive over by Shardul.

1528 IST: Umpires Ravikant Reddy and Chris Gaffaney come out to take their positions. K. L. Rahul and Quinton de Kock come out to open.  Mustafizur Rahman will bowl the first over. All set for action.

1515 IST: Capitals’ record this season at the Wankhede Stadium: two losses and a win. Both losses were after their opponent put up a gigantic total on the board, and their win against KKR here on April 28 was facilitated by their bowlers – in particular Kuldeep Yadav – who restricted KKR to 146 for 9 in 20 overs. Needless to say, their bowling performance today will be key, and if the LSG openers can be dismissed cheaply, they will have a big advantage.

1500 IST: K. L. Rahul has won the toss. LSG will bat first. “Have asked the batters to play smarter,” says Rahul. One change for LSG: Avesh Khan goes out, K. Gowtham comes in.

Don’t mind bowling first, says Rishabh Pant. No change in the Capitals’ line-up.

1445 IST: Three wins out of the last five games for both teams. LSG has two more wins, but has played a game more. A win for the Capitals will close the gap between the two teams further. LSG vs DC MATCH PREVIEW

The Delhi Capitals (DC) will be out to exact revenge when it meets Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a return leg fixture at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

The DC bowlers ran into a marauding Quinton de Kock in their previous Indian Premier League (IPL) meeting on April 7. The South African wicketkeeper-batter’s 52-ball 80 saw LSG register a convincing six-wicket victory.

DC and LSG head into Sunday’s fixture on the back of emphatic wins over the Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings, respectively.

The Super Giants’ ordinary bowling performances in the PowerPlay this season may hand the Capitals an early advantage with the franchise possessing a formidable opening pair in Prithvi Shaw and David Warner.

Only Shikhar Dhawan is ahead of Warner when it comes to the number of runs scored in the first six overs since IPL 2016.

The Capitals have scored the second-lowest runs at the death this season (267). They will be wary of the threat posed by the Super Giants bowlers, who have run rings around batters during the slog overs. Lucknow’s 22 wickets in the last four overs is the best by any team, thus far.

A 3:30 pm start means dew won’t be a factor. The track at Wankhede is expected to be hard. Teams batting first have won five of the last seven games at the venue. With a dry outfield and smaller boundaries, the upcoming match has the makings of a power-hitting showdown.
