David Benavidez: “I feel like I can hurt Canelo, you have to get him before he gets you”

The crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena rose to their feet as Canelo Alvarez began looking for his chance. When Caleb Plant, Alvarez’s rival last weekend, began to crumble under his might, those in the arena could feel the end coming.

Before ending the program in the 11th round, Alvarez and Plant participated in a tough competition. From the very beginning, Plant has enjoyed a lot of success. The 29-year-old boxer’s boxing ability made Alvarez distinctly disappointed. But, despite trading multiple rounds, Alvarez’s strength was starting to suffer.

In the penultimate round, the Mexican star scored the first defeat of the night. Shortly after, referee Russell Mora scrapped their part entirely as Alvarez registered another concussion knockdown. But while the newly crowned undisputed super-middleweight champion stood on the ropes and pounded his chest, David Benavidez sat primly on the couch from his palatial estate. It’s not that the two-time former super middleweight player didn’t like the event, he simply saw the end result come far before it actually happened.

“What happened was exactly what I expected,” Benavidez said in an interview with FightHype.com. “I have said time and time again that the people who will fight well against Canelo are the powerful. You can defend all you want but sooner or later you will get hit. You have to get him before he gets you. “

With all four major world titles now in Alvarez’s hands, the multi-division champion will now sit back and think about his next move, but not before taking a long break. Once Alvarez is out of his itch to play again, he will have a long list of possible opponents he could face next. According to Alvarez head coach Eddy Reynoso, Benavidez, along with WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo and light heavyweight boxer Artur Beterbiev topped the list.

More than anything, Benavidez would love to have the chance to face Alvarez next. And while acknowledging Alvarez is a great fighter, he also revealed that he has everything in his boxing kit to inflict serious damage on the fourth-rate star.

“I see a lot of potential holes in Canelo’s game and I feel like I can expose it. I feel like I can hurt Canelo, I believe in my punches. I know he’s very strong but I feel like if I hit the right shots, I can hurt him too.”

Before Benavidez gets ahead of himself, though, he has work to do. The 24-year-old will take on competitor Kyrone Davis at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona this Saturday night, November 13.

Although Alvarez was the top prize, Benavidez knew full well that a poor performance against Davis could ruin everything.

“Kyrone Davis had a great final fight with Anthony Dirrell so I know he was a dog that lived in it. He knows that this is a big opportunity for him so we are taking him very seriously. ”
