Cru Halliday tops FP2 as Jack Miller starts to progress

ASBK

The final five minutes were hectic in this morning’s Superbike qualifier opening, which ended with Troy Herfoss taking the lead over hometown hero Arthur Sissis. That pairing beat Mike Jones and Wayne Maxwell by almost eight out of ten while Bryan Staring led Cru Halliday in fifth.

The Thriller Motorsports trio took their first laps on brand new motorcycles that had never turned in a fit of rage. Jack Miller on the Ducati finished FP1 at P11, while Josh Hook (Honda) and Marcel Schroetter (Yamaha) were at P16 and P17. Hooky drove that session without traction or wheel control, but hopes to have that functionality before the end of the day.

Moto3 rival Joel Kelso (Livson BMW) is a P18 but was nearly four seconds behind when he accelerated on a Superbike for the first time.

Ambient temperatures in the morning only inched up 20 degrees but by the time FP2 started at 13:20 the mercury was already up 30 degrees and the track temperature was heading towards 50 degrees. Although it’s starting to cool today, it won’t be tomorrow as overnight temperatures are expected to only drop to 18 degrees, before peak temperatures are predicted to be around 30 degrees, with a chance of thunderstorms. making things pleasant Saturday afternoon… Sunday’s race day is expected to be much cooler with a forecast of just 21 and the chance of occasional showers is slim.

A lot of changes were made to the machines before FP2. Penrite Honda is working on trying to give Herfoss a better balance bike, along with changes to the fork springs and oil height for young Senna Agius.

I’ve been reading a bit on social media, I know, I should turn it off… Anyway there’s been some talk about Jack Miller not being able to use the same tires available to everyone else this weekend. That’s 100% wrong, Miller will be running on Pirelli rubber here this weekend and he has the same options as any other Pirelli driver.

The main difference on Jack’s bike from some of the Ducati machines in the field is that due to MotoGP testing limitations, he cannot run the full Marelli ECU to current Ducati rider specs. school. That’s not a huge drawback as it sounds like a lot of lap records have been set on the same standard V4 R electronics that Jack is using, and honestly, people in the field. This sector has equipped the ECU Marelli doesn’t really have an army of data analysts to make the most of its capabilities.

The basic thing that is likely to hold up Jack this weekend is that he doesn’t have time to sit on his bike. They were given access to basic setup data and geometry from another team, but what Jack needed to be able to compete was to get through and achieve a suspension setup that would allow him to hit got a balanced setup that both gave him good grip and allowed him to ride in such a way that he was able to maintain proper grip for 11 laps. This is something that every other team above and below the pit lane is aiming for as well. But Jack is starting from zero, while everyone else has a lot of setup data and insight into their bikes, so it’s still a pretty big task for Jack and his team of guys. His joviality has entrusted himself, and I do not underestimate the importance of that challenge.

Anyway, let’s start with what happened during the 25-minute FP2 session that started at 13.20pm this afternoon in South Australia.

As we mentioned earlier, Josh Hook’s Fireblade currently doesn’t have active traction or wheel control and unfortunately he fell at 12 early in FP2.

Jack Miller was half a second past his best FP1 time in his first lap, a good sign that the Sports Horror Team is working in the right direction. He improved on that again over the next few laps as both track and pace heated up here at The Bend.

A lot of riders finished good laps early on before returning to the track to make some setup changes.

The pace then heats up again during the last five minutes of the session. Cru Halliday set the day’s fastest all-new lap at 1m51,518 with four minutes left. Arthur Sissis then advanced to P2 after hitting 1m51,591 in his eighth round of the session. And that’s how the session ended, Halliday leading Sissis, Herfoss P3 and Jack Miller P4 leading Wayne Maxwell. While Herfoss finished third, he was unable to go faster than the time he booked in FP1.
