Microsoft said earlier on Friday that its cloud services have been largely restored after an outage that affected cloud applications in the United States. It is unclear whether the issue is related to the CrowdStrike update.
However, the update issue at CrowdStrike alone appears to have directly affected Windows systems worldwide, causing laptops to display an error screen known as the “blue screen of death.”
“CrowdStrike has received reports of an incident on a Windows server related to the Falcon Sensor,” CrowdStrike said in a recorded phone message.
Airlines, broadcasters, telecommunications companies and banks were among many businesses reporting problems on Friday, although it was not immediately clear what caused each problem.
London Stock Exchange says there is a technical problem with its RNS news service under investigation and Sky News, owned by CNBC’s parent company Comcast, temporarily stopped broadcasting on Friday morning.
Meanwhile, airports around the world have reported delays due to technical faults and some planes have been grounded. Spain’s airport authority AENA has warned travelers of delays on Friday due to “computer system problem“, and British airline Ryanair said it was experiencing disruption due to a third-party IT issue. The airline advised passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled departure time.
Australian telecommunications company Telstra said global issues affecting CrowdStrike and Microsoft had disrupted some of its systems. “This issue is causing some delays for some of our customers and we thank them for their patience,” a company spokesperson said.
NBC Universal was also affected by the CrowdStrike outage.
