“Created to Correct Mistakes”: Daniel Vettori Wants ‘Wides’ By DRS

The Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders match on Monday saw an interesting breakdown as the Royals captain Sanju Samson decided to review a decision out of frustration that the on-field umpire ruled it on a large scale, regardless of the umpire. Rinku Singh move around his fold and go further away from the stump to try and play ball. KKR were in a comfortable position and looked good to win the game anyway, but a couple of controversial tackles let Samson down.

According to ICC Rule 22.4.1 of Wide, “The umpire shall not consider a serve as Wide if the striker, by movement, causes the ball to go past him/her or bring the ball sufficiently within range. with to be able to hit it with a normal cricket hit.”

Now, the implementation of the above rule is under the jurisdiction of the referee on the field as seen in the match. Former coach and captain RCB Daniel Vettori although feel that DRS should be used to decide on extensive calls to “correct mistakes” if any.

“Sure [players should be allowed to review wides]. The players will be able to decide in such important matters.

“It was a little different today where KKR always looked like they were going to win. But we’ve sat here so many times and seen decisions going against those who threw too close and the referee was wrong. So the players the players should have some avenue to correct those mistakes That’s why DRS was brought in: to correct the mistakes I want to see that happen And the players are the hitters very good price for that. They get it right more often than not,” Vettori told ESPNCricinfo.

KKR won the match with the last 7 players to bounce back after 5 consecutive wins and continue their hunt for a play-off spot.
