Craft Beer brings people and puppies together – Dogster
Second Chance Beer Company The main motto is “Seize a Pint, Save a Pup.” That’s because this small, independent craft brewery in San Diego, California, is dedicated to helping rescue dogs.
The brewery was co-founded in 2015 by CEO Virginia Morrison and her husband, master brewer Marty Mendiola. Animal welfare is an important element of the company and something they are both very passionate about.
“When we talked about opening our own brewery, we knew that giving back would be a big part of our ethos,” says Virginia.
One percent of sales from their New Day and Buddy beer (each with a picture of dogs on the can) goes to Second Chance Dog Rescue and Animal Pads in San Diego, as well as Follow your heart in Gilbert, Arizona. Since the brewery’s founding, more than $257,000 has gone to dog rescues.
The ultimate dog-friendly brewery
To say that Second Chance Brewing Company is dog-friendly is an understatement. Virginia and Marty bring their dog, Citra, to work every day. The two dogs the couple foster, Chinook and Chuck, have found their permanent home with the brewery employees, and they come to work every day, too. Other dog breeders also bring their canine companions to work, and patrons are encouraged to bring their pups to join the fun.
Help a rescue dog get adopted
The brewery is instrumental in helping rescue dogs find their permanent home by organizing dozens of events. A portion of the revenue from fundraising events like the annual Pupapalooza goes to the animal rescue activities they support.
By 2023, the brewery’s goal is to adopt 23 dogs and donate at least $2,300 to each of their rescue partners.
“In addition, we will be opening more welcoming tasting rooms to dogs and continuing to raise awareness about the benefits of adoption,” Virginia said.
Aside from dogs, Virginia’s other passion is Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She founded the San Diego Brewer’s Guild DEI committee in 2019 and is currently Chair of the National Association of Brewers DEI Committee.
As Second Chance’s website puts it, it’s “a community where beer brings people and their kids together. More than just a brewery – we embrace diversity, value innovation and give back without compromise.”
