Life on coral reefs: Corals, sea squirts, sponges, Bryozoa, comb jellies, marine plants
Indo-Pacific Field Guide
Corals, sponges, parasites and sea squids form an important part of the reef’s biodiversity. Without knowledge of their main characteristics, families and species, a diver, underwater photographer or snorkeler cannot even understand what he sees underwater. This book not only provides the necessary knowledge but also gives many macro-life examples associated with it. This is important because it is impossible to become an expert on sea cucumbers, shrimp or fish without knowing their habitat.
The book will be useful to those working in coral reef science and conservation, especially when undertaking surveys as it is very comprehensive when it comes to benthic communities. It incorporates the latest scientific research, including the latest taxonomic information as of the date of publication.
The marine reef animals and plants considered in this book are grouped into 10 phyla: Corals and their allies (Cnidaria), Sea squirts (Tunicata), Sponges (Porifera), Moss animals (Bryozoa ), Ctenophora, Brachiopods, Entoprocts, Foraminiferans, seaweeds and cyanobacteria. The book also provides basic information about jellyfish. It features the most commonly seen underwater species, as well as some of the most incredible, such as the Immortal Jellyfish, the Dangerous Box Jellyfish, and the War Jellyfish or Bluebottle Jellyfish.
It’s not surprising that corals, anemones, and related species make up more than half of this book, given their enormous importance to ocean life and their incredible diversity. What is more surprising is that, given the tectonic processes taking place in coral taxonomy, popular guides written in a language accessible to the average person have not been published for more than 20 years. However, the remaining groups of reef dwellers in this book have been forgotten by the public for even longer, and some of them are simply unknown to most divers and photographers. underwater today.
Inside the book:
- More than 2,100 full-color photographs of more than 1,430 species;
- Live photographs of most species have not appeared in field guides or popular books in recent decades;
- Convenient pictorial guidance is supplemented by a table of contents at the end of the book.
Together with this volume, the total number of species in the 8-book Reef ID Books series reaches a staggering 8,500 species!
