China’s BYD wins five-star European safety rating for electric SUV
LONDON – BYD on Wednesday received a coveted five-star Euro NCAP safety rating for its electric ATTO 3 crossover SUVChina’s newest carmaker is top-rated as it seeks to gain a foothold in Europe’s competitive auto market.
Two other Chinese-made cars – eCitroën C5 X, built by a joint venture between Stellantis and Dongfeng, and Mobilize Limo, an electric sedan manufactured by Renault along with Jiangling Motors – received a four-star rating.
Assessments from the European New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) are not binding, as it does not certify vehicles for road use. But European consumers pay close attention to Euro NCAP safety tests, and car manufacturers actively market good ratings.
Last month, Chinese rival Great Wall Motor received a five-star rating for its brand WEY Coffee 01 Hybrid SUV and its ORA-branded Funky Cat electric sedan (respectively, below).
Just this week BYD launched the ATTO 3 in India, on sale in China like Yuan Plus.
Last week, German car rental Sixt company said they have committed to buy about 100,000 tram from China’s BYD in the coming years.
Among the other cars that received a five-star rating on Wednesday was Mercedes-Benz’s EQE electric sedan (below).
Euro NCAP says the EQE’s driver assistance systems – which include a system that moves the car to the slowest lane on the motorway and stops if the driver fails to react – made it the car with the highest score. highest to date in terms of driver assistance functions, says Euro NCAP.
