Chery will have 31 dealerships at launch, including in East Malaysia - will open more dealerships by the end of 2023

By now, you must know that Chery has returned to Malaysia and its debut models – the omoda 5 And Tiggo 8 Pro – are sleek modern SUVs that differ from the Cherys we’ve known, if you know about the brand’s first appearance in the first place.

Last week, Chery Malaysia announced that the official launch of the brand, which will also see the launch of Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro, will happen on July 6th. If you live in PJ/Damansara, you may also have seen old-brand advertising on large LED billboards, such as the one on the Sprint Expressway between Phileo and TTDI.

Chery’s return to Malaysia is unusual in many ways. CKD domestic assembly from the start Is one. Even established brands often start selling with imported CBU cars before gradually switching to CKD models. It looks like the Wuhu-based automaker likes to start things off with grandeur, as there will be 31 dealerships at launch.

At today’s media preview, Chery Malaysia head Leo Chen told us the total includes dealers in East Malaysia. Needless to say, all the major cities in Peninsular Malaysia are covered, and then some.

As if that weren’t surprising enough, Chen says more dealerships will be opening later this year. Forty dealerships for a new Chinese brand competing with established rivals like Honda and Toyota should be proof that OEMs are serious and products are convincing – after all, dealers are currently spending their own money for future profits.

Besides Japanese brands, Chery also has to confidently confront Proton, which has paved the way for Chinese SUVs with the X series. The interesting Omoda 5 is a B-segment 1.5T SUV that competes with the Proton X50, Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross; while the Tiggo 8 Pro is a 2.0T three-row SUV that competes with rivals like Proton X90Mazda’s CX-8 and the newly launched model Toyota Innova. We’re expecting the Omoda 5’s RRP to be somewhere between the X50 Flagship (RM113,300) and the HR-V Turbo V (RM134,800), perhaps closer to the Proton. And what about RM165k for Tiggo 8 Pro?
