Chery Omoda 5 EV Specifications Revealed – 61 kWh battery, 450 km range, electric SUV coming in Malaysia by the end of 2023

Last week, we introduced you Omoda 5 EV took center stage at Chery’s Auto Shanghai 2023 booth. We even told you that the all-electric version of the Omoda 5 SUV will be the coming to Malaysia later this year. However, details are few.

Well, we now have some information about the Omoda 5 EV after attending the Omoda and Jaecoo brand event at Chery’s headquarters in Wuhu. O&J are sub-brands of the Chery Group, deployed in markets where Chery is already present in the mainstream market. Omoda is aimed at young people, while the new Jaecoo sub-brand caters to more sophisticated categories. We’ll get the Omoda 5 with the Chery logo, but some markets will get the Omoda badge instead.

We now know that the Omoda 5 EV has a 61 kWh battery that powers a 221 hp (165 kW) motor. The 0-100 km/h sprint is done in 7.8 seconds and Chery claims an energy efficiency of 15 kWh per 100 km. For DC fast charging, Chery quotes 35 minutes to get from 0-80% SOC. Range is claimed to be 450 km per full charge, but we don’t know if that’s in NEDC or WLTP – Chinese brands often cite the previous cycle, an older cycle for larger numbers.

These numbers closely match a survey that Chery Malaysia released in July 2022, which mentions such points as 150 kW (204 PS) and 400 Nm, a 64 kWh battery and a range of 450 km according to WLTP standards. Also mentioned is fast DC charging from 0-80% SOC in 40 minutes and AC charging in five hours.

Omoda 5 EV is tuned from ICE-powered B-segment SUV, and the battery is on the floor. Compared to the ICE Omoda 5, the EV has a very different face. Already over the grille has a bold and intricate pattern, and comes with a cleaner, more conventional, blocked nose, since no cooling is required. Omoda is spelled prominently on the nose. There are also two-tone aerodynamic wheels.

Inside, the car shown in Shanghai has a very interesting color scheme with the main color being blue, contrasting with the yellow stitching and light wood paneling – very refreshing. The steering wheel has the Omoda logo and the screens combined with the modern dashboard and angled phone slot remain. The gear lever of the ICE vehicle has been removed.

According to Chery Malaysia, the Omoda 5 EV is coming soon, likely to be introduced by the end of 2023. The electric SUV will enter our market as a CBU import from China, taking advantage of the free offers. Malaysia’s tax on imported electric vehicles. This is in contrast to the domestic assembly roadmap for internal combustion engines Omoda 5, coming soon in CKD form.

As for competitors, we can immediately think of Ora Good Cat and BYD Atto 3. The round cat eye is priced from RM139,800 for the Pro 47.8 kWh (400 km NEDC) to RM169,800 for the Pro version. 47.8 kWh (400 km NEDC) 63.1 kWh super (500 km NEDC). Meanwhile, the BYD Atto 3 is priced from RM149,800 for the Standard range 49.92 kWh (410 km NEDC) to RM167,800 for Extended range 60.48 kWh (480 km NEDC).

What do you think of the look of the Omoda 5 EV, and when compared to the bold nose of ICE version? Specifications aside, EVs are bought for their looks/visuals, and the Omoda 5 EV looks pretty cool, definitely more interesting than the neat Atto 3. As for Ora, with such an extremely cute design, GWM could have placed itself on the list of leaning angles towards female drivers. Will that be your choice?
