CATL improves cell-to-pack technology, claims advantages over Tesla 4680 cell
Battery supplier CATL on Wednesday announced third-generation cell-to-pack technology, claiming the new version generates more power than Tesla’s latest battery technology.
Cell-to-pack refers to the direct integration of cells into a battery pack without the need for modules used in most current battery pack designs. CATL claims the latest version of this technology, called Qilin Batteries, can deliver 13% more power than the 4680 format cells Tesla is switching to, with the same volume.

The 4680 cells are larger versions of the cylindrical cells that Tesla currently uses, which CEO Elon Musk says will help save costs. The automaker plans to start using them in production vehicles, starting with Model Y crossovers assembled at its new plant in Texas.
CATL also claims cost effectiveness as an advantage of cell-to-pack technology. A company press release says the cell-to-pack will provide “a balance between long range and economic efficiency.” The company has made agreements with a number of automakers on technology, including Hyundai, Kia and Genesis. However, no automaker has yet confirmed the production model will use the technology.

Cell-to-pack isn’t the only revolutionary battery technology CATL claims to have in its arsenal. The company has said that they have the technology to million miles battery, 16 yearsand it has revealed some exciting specs and performance for the future sodium ion cells.
CATL also earlier this year launched a battery swap solution. Called Evogo, it’s a standalone business built on swap-friendly packages, all for a one-minute swap, according to CATL. In January, CATL said Evogo would launch in 10 cities, with more information to be revealed at a later date.
