Caress offers rematch of intercontinental leaders


Sometimes a race is so good, you have to watch it again. That seems to be the case with the Caress Stakes (G3T) on July 25 at Saratoga Race Track. The top three finishers in the June 7 Intercontinental Stakes (G2T), who were separated by a neck, raced back-to-back in a sprint on Thursday over the same 5 1/2 furlongs at Spa.

Rose for Debra who has reached the goal in all but one of his 13 career starts, enters the $200,000 Caress as the overwhelming favorite. The daughter of Liam’s Map will break into 10th place as the favorite at 8 a.m.

The grey or bay mare was a head behind at the finish line in the Intercontinental Stakes at Spa last time out. She chased the lead but ran out of steam in the final stretch, running out of room. It was a rare defeat for the 5-year-old, who has an 8-2-1 record in 13 starts.

The winner of the June clash is The future is the present (7-2). Native Larry Johnson has been nipping at the heels of the leader, Manufacturer Kaufy before jumping out with a furlong to the left and holding on for the win.

Roses for Debra barely made it into the Intercontinental with rival Kaufymaker (9-2) trailing slightly in third. Greg Kaufman, the home horse, is by Jimmy Creed will also seek revenge in Caress.
