Canterbury Park racecourse officials today announced an increase in participation incentives designed to reward owners of thoroughbred racehorses from the most remote locations. Owners of Canterbury racehorses who most recently started in May at a racecourse located more than 1,500 miles from Shakopee, Minn will receive $1,250, a $250 increase from the previously announced amount. . Owners of horses that race between May 18 and May 29 most recently starting at races near Canterbury will continue to receive $1,000. These bonuses are in addition to any money earned.
The bonus increase is partly meant to cushion the impact of soaring inflation in the US and fuel prices that have risen more than 40% year-over-year. Canterbury regularly features starters from the Golden Gate Fields in California, Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs in Florida and Lawn Paradise in Arizona.
The prize money was obtained in partnership with the Minnesota HBPA, the organization representing racehorse owners, their trainers and employees. Announced earlier this year is an additional bonus program designed to incentivize the participation of horse racing owners in Illinois. A purebred starter who has raced in Illinois in 2021 or 2022 but hasn’t started before at Canterbury will be eligible for a $1,000 bonus in the first start of the 2022 season through July 17.
