Canon patented another cool lens

Canon has been quite active in the development of RF mount lenses, releasing some cool designs, such as RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM and RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM. They don’t seem to have any intention of slowing down, as another boundary-pushing design appeared in a recent patent.

The patent covers many f/1.8 lenses, the most impressive of which is the 150mm f/1.8 design. Such a lens would have an extremely wide aperture for such a focal length and would begin to encroach on the kind of design we see with 200mm f/2 lenses. Currently, the consumer lens with the longest focal length and aperture wider than f/2 in Canon’s lineup is RF 135mm f/1.8 L IS USM, often described as superlative. So despite the impressive design, I doubt that they plan to bring a similar lens to the market. With that said, I suspect that at some point we’ll see a 200mm f/2 lens (or maybe even a 200mm f/1.8 if the company wants bragging rights). Such lenses are popular for indoor sports, close-up wildlife, and extreme portraiture. While we probably won’t see the 150mm f/1.8 lens, it’s nice to see the company continue to push the boundaries of design.
