Canon launches EOS R5 Mark II

Next to Professional-grade EOS R1Canon has also announced the release of an updated version of its hugely popular product. EOS R5 Camerareleased four years ago— EOS R5 Mark II Camera. Like its predecessor, the Mark II shoots 45 megapixels, but the sensor is a newly developed one that’s back-illuminated and stacked, promising faster readout speeds like the EOS R1. And like its new flagship pro camera, the EOS R5 II incorporates the DIGIC X processor alongside a DIGIC Accelerator co-processor. Canon says the AF system in the R5 II is faster and more accurate, and the camera can shoot up to 30 fps with the electronic shutter (full-resolution RAW images with AF)—with less rolling shutter than the EOS R5.

As you’d expect, video capabilities have also been improved. The EOS R5 Mark II can shoot 8K DCI (8192 x 4320) or 8K (7680 x 4320) RAW internally at up to 60p (up from 8K/30p with the R5)—though the 8K/60p footage is shot in Light RAW, not Standard RAW. Oversampled 4K/60p and pixel-binned 4K/120p video are also possible, both using the full width of the sensor. The camera supports Canon Log 2/Log 3.

To round things out, you get the same Eye Control AF as on the R1 and R3, a 5.76M-dot EVF with 0.76x magnification and a selectable refresh rate of 120fps or 60fps (twice the brightness of the EOS R5’s EVF), a fully tilting 3.2-inch 2.1M-dot LCD, and dual card slots (CFexpress and SD UHS-II). While the EOS R5 II can use the battery that was introduced with the original EOS R5 (LP-EP6NH), users will need the new LP-EP6P battery to get the most out of the new camera.

Available from August, the Canon EOS R5 Mark II will cost $4,300 (body only).
