Imagine a boxer or MMA fighter threatening to hit NFL star Tom Brady for being deemed disrespectful. That would be equivalent.
Messi apparently obtained the shirt in an exchange with an opposing player. It lies on the floor when it is moved.
“Did you see Messi mopping the floor with our jerseys and flags,” Alvarez wrote on Twitter. “He’d better pray to God that I didn’t find him. Just as I respect Argentina, he must respect Mexico. I’m not talking about the whole country, I’m just talking about the bulls – which Messi did.”
One observer, former Argentine player Sergio Aquero, thinks one thing is obvious: The boxer overreacted.
“Mr. Canelo,” Aquero tweeted, “don’t make excuses for trouble, you certainly don’t know football or what happens in the dressing room. The shirts are always on the floor after a game because they’re soaked. sweat.”
Alvarez responded to those who questioned his reaction to Messi’s actions.
“Anyone who doesn’t defend their country,” he tweeted, “is an asshole… fanatical one thing, your identity another. LONG LIVE MEXICO.”
Alvarez may want to focus on devising a strategy to turn the tide with Dmitry Bivol, not go to war with football legends.
